THE TIMOTHY SCHOOL

Serving children with Autism for over 40 years

We appreciate your interest in our school and the children that we serve.  They are an important part of our lives and we celebrate every achievement that they make each day.

The Timothy School faculty is specialized in educating children with autism.  We are trained in research-based approaches that are proven to be effective in teaching our students.  Our program is designed to address the characteristics of autism that set the children apart from their typically developing peers. Our program emphasizes instruction that will allow our students to be contributing members of their communities.

Our academic curriculum addresses both basic and functional skills.  Some children participate in formal reading programs and learn computer skills, while others focus on daily living and pre-vocational training. As autism involves impairments in communication, our speech clinicians’ work in collaboration with our music therapist, occupational therapists, and classroom teachers to teach the children ways of expressing their wants and needs.  They also learn how to communicate in social situations and to participate in community activities.  Recreational skills are emphasized in physical education classes where the children learn leisure skills that they can enjoy with their families. We have our own basketball team and many students from local school teams participate with us in teaching our children what it means to win a game.

Our behavior program focuses on teaching students appropriate behaviors to replace problematic behaviors that may impede their educational progress.  Behavior programs are individually designed based on each student’s unique learning needs.

Our school is recognized throughout the Commonwealth as an Approved Private School for children diagnosed with autism.  Since we are considered to be a model program for our students, we are always in search of best practices to increase our effectiveness in teaching them.  Our faculty is trained in Structured Teaching, ABA approaches, the T-Base Model of Positive Behavioral supports, the Picture Communication System, and augmentative communication devices.
